The Art of Guzheng
TRADITIONAL CHINESE MUSIC, REIMAGINED FOR MODERN LEARNERS
The Guzheng (古筝), often called the Chinese zither, is a plucked string instrument with a history spanning over 2,500 years. Renowned for its lush, cascading tones and expressive depth, the Guzheng holds a cherished place in Chinese classical music.
Traditionally crafted with a wooden soundboard and 21 or more strings, the instrument is played using finger picks to produce intricate melodies and fluid glissandos. Its unique resonance evokes landscapes, emotions, and stories deeply rooted in Chinese heritage.
At The Guzheng Academy, we honour this tradition while embracing modern artistry. Whether you’re a complete beginner or a returning enthusiast, the Guzheng offers a rewarding path into the soul of Chinese music.

Do I need any prior musical experience to learn the Guzheng?
Not at all! Our classes are designed for complete beginners as well as students with some music background. The Guzheng is remarkably intuitive, and our instructors will guide you through everything from proper hand posture to reading simple notation. You’ll find yourself playing melodies faster than you might expect!
What age groups do you cater to?
We welcome learners of all ages — from young children around age six all the way to adults. Each lesson plan is customized to suit your goals and learning pace. Whether you’re a parent nurturing a child’s new interest or an adult exploring a lifelong dream, our classes provide a supportive, age‑appropriate environment.
Do I need an instrument to practice at home?
Having a Guzheng at home can really help you progress, but it’s not required to start learning. In your early lessons, we provide instruments for use during class so you can explore before deciding to invest in one. When you’re ready, our team can guide you in choosing a Guzheng that fits your needs and budget.
What is the cost of a Guzheng?
The price of a Guzheng varies depending on craftsmanship, wood type, and brand. A quality beginner Guzheng typically starts around the mid‑hundreds range, while performance models can cost more. We’re happy to advise you on reliable options and trusted suppliers so you can find an instrument that sounds beautiful and lasts for years.
Do you offer performance opportunities for students?
Absolutely! We encourage students to share their progress through recitals, ensemble sessions, and cultural events throughout the year. Performing builds confidence and deepens appreciation for traditional Chinese music — but participation is always at your comfort level.
